Subject: [*] AutoLaunch 1.0.8

AutoLaunch is a screen saver "engine" that launches an application after
your Macintosh has been idle for a specified amount of time. It's great
for running stand-alone MacroMedia Director movies as screen savers,
executing AppleScript applets during idle time, restarting demos after a
person walks away from an in-store Mac, etc. It will also keep
applications like FileMaker Pro Server in the foreground so they run faster
when the server is unattended.

AutoLaunch is capable of locating an application anywhere on a Mac's hard
disk, making distribution of Director presentations much easier - you don't
have to worry about installation procedures or that users will move the
presentation to another folder - it'll always work.

A new capability in this release will make web browsers periodically cycle
through a list of URLs, letting you display your favorite web pages during
idle time! It currently requires some ResEdit manipulation to set the
URLs, but future versions will provide a user interface if interest merits
it.

Subject: [*] BulkRate 2.5.2

Welcome to BulkRate 2.5.2. This document contains important info not included
in
the manual.

BulkRate is an offline reader for FirstClass BBSs that runs on the
Macintosh. It
can capture messages for offline reading and replying, and can automatically
retrieve attached files for you. BulkRate is shareware - $25 US.

Shareware payments are now handled via Kagi. Use the Register program included
with BulkRate, or register via the World-Wide-Web:
<http://kagi.direct.net/cgi-bin/register1.cgi?IH>

If you re-upload BulkRate to other BBSs or services, please include all the
files
that came with it, especially the documentation.

Send bug reports or suggestions to greg_neagle@kagi.com or to the OneNet
BulkRate
conference.

Note that my e-mail address has changed.

BulkRate 2.5 adds support for TCP/IP connections to FirstClass servers, and in
addition can make use of any available serial port for "normal" modem
connections
- even PC Card modems.

Version 2.5.2 notes
* Fixed some more date/time display problems that occured with certian non-US
date formats.

* Fixed a bug in the file transfer routines.

* Added a delay between BBSs when calling mulitple BBSs with a script - this is
the same as the redial delay.

* Fixed a recurring bug that occured when BulkRate was waiting for certain
responses from the server; one occasional symptom of this bug was a "Could not
confirm message was sent" error.

* Increased the time BulkRate will wait while trying to establish a TCP
connection.

Subject: [*] CacheSaver 1.0.2f (French version)

Like many people, you've probably found that increasing the size of the
disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many
applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk
cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in
RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk.

The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save
information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while
before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes
before the cache gets saved, your data is lost.

CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or "flushing")
the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while
you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your
Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it
automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so
you can flush the disk cache manually.

In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Server 2.7.4

Modules available:
Fax, SMTP, POP3, UUCP, IMAP, LAN, Pager, List, Print, File

Dial-up Internet E-mail supported:
  POP3 multi-account & Unified Domain-Wide account
  SMTP dial-up retrieval
  UUCP

The CommuniGate Server is the kernel part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. When installed, it runs in background (no dedicated
computer required) and:
* stores all messages sent and received;
* enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their mailboxes,
  queues, etc.;
* loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. Fax Gate, UUCP Gate, SMTP Gate,
  etc.) and creates the runtime environment for those modules;
* maintains system activity log;
* implements routing algorithms;
* maintains a resource database and provides access to that database for
CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax cover pages, sounds, voice
  scripts, info tables, etc.).

The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator client
software. The client software allows you to compose and read messages, to
manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used by CommuniGate administrator to
configure, maintain, monitor and control the CommuniGate server - locally
or remotely.

With the POP Gate and SMTP Gate modules installed, the CommuniGate Server
can be used as a messaging server for clients running not only the
CommuniGator application, but plain POP-based mailers (as Eudora and
Emailer), on any platform.

With the IMAP Gate installed, the CommuniGate Server can be used with any
IMAP-based mail client, on any platform.

Revision History
2.7.4 07-Feb-97
* Messages with bad Date: format are now marked with the current Server date,
  not with the "zero-date".
* The "Mark Important/Mark Unimportant" User Rule actions are implemented.
* Bug fix: the Serial Port check procedure is fixed (it could cause some
modules such as the UUCP Gate to stop using some ports).

Subject: [*] Enigma 2.6.2

I am pleased to announce the release of Enigma 2.6.2. An upgrade to my
privacy protecting encryption application which runs in native mode on
Power Macintoshs.

Version 2.6.2 fixes some bugs and adds some minor features: * A problem
selecting folders and multiple files in the vault window is fixed. *
Added reveal-invisible menu command for finding those invisible vaults.
* Fixed a problem that prevented using Self-extracting vaults in version
2.6. * Fixed drag-manager crash with old (version 7.1 or older) system
software. * Fixed minor window position problem with two monitors

You should upgrade if you are using any previous version of Enigma.

Enigma is an application which can provide near absolute protection for
your sensitive documents and applications. By downloading this
application you can encrypt files using a limited version of the
Government Standard DES algorithm. For only $20 this can be upgraded to
the full DES standard (US and Canada only).

Enigma supports vaults which are like very securely locked file
cabinets. Multiple files are stored in them. Files can be added,
deleted, renamed, and extracted at any time. You can create folders
inside the vault to organize your files better. Entire folders can be
extracted or added in one operation. Security is enhanced because
filenames and lengths are protected by encryption in addition to the
contents. No other free or shareware encryption program offers the
flexibility of Enigma vaults.

You can also create self extracting vaults to send to friends and
associates who do not have the Enigma application. Self extracting
vaults are stand alone applications that cannot be opened without the
proper key.

Enigma requires system 7.0 or later along with about 2 megabyte of
memory and 400K of disk space. Documentation enclosed specifies
ordering information for a system 6 or earlier compatible version, but
the vault features are unavailable.

Hyper-Stack Player Pro-68k Copr. 1995-96 Bruce A. Pokras

Hyper-Stack Player Pro ("HSP Pro") is a player for HyperCard stacks which
provides the functionality of all versions of Apple's HyperCard Player up
to and including the lastest version, 2.3.5. So if your Mac did not come
with HyperCard Player 2.2 or 2.3, you can use HSP Pro instead. Available
separately for 680x0 Macs (68k version) and for Power Macs (PPC version).
HSP Pro is an upgrade of my previously released Hyper-Stack Player 2.3.

***A special new feature is HSP Pro's built-in ability to view and edit
scripts and the contents of locked and/or hidden fields.***

HSP Pro goes further than just allowing you to merely use HyperCard stacks:
 - create buttons which you can link to your favorite stacks (size, color
and style are customizable. You can even add a monochrome icon of your
choice);
 - use the "Print Stack..." and "Print Field..." menu commands of the
"File" menu (these are ordinarily disabled in Apple's Player);
 - view and edit the contents of fields (even locked and hidden ones);
 - view and edit the scripts which make HyperCard stacks work;
 - add buttons to other stacks to give them added features;
 - other new features over previous versions are described in an "HSP Pro
New Features" file which is included. Some features require a registration
code for activation.

HSP Pro provides a good way for school computer labs to provide access to
their HyperCard stacks. A password protection scheme prevents the students
>From making any unauthorized changes.

Shareware $10/Mac; Site licenses $50/site (e.g., school computer labs or a
single corporate location). Free upgrade for registrants of previous
versions (or anyone who registers a previous version by February 28, 1997.
See the included "HSP Upgrading & Special Offer" file).

HSP Pro can be registered world-wide by credit card using either E-mail
(with automatically encrypted credit card info), fax or snail-mail through
the Kagi Shareware service. Kagi also accepts checks (payable in U.S.
dollars) and cash (a number of non-U.S. currencies are supported).

Subject: [*] Internet Logger v. 2.1

Internet Logger v. 2.1 is a utility application allows you to keep track of
how
much time you spend on your internet accounts. It requires System 7 or later.
It can also be used to track long distance telephone use or to track time
spent
on client accounts. First, among many other potential uses, Internet
Logger will
provide a convenient means to fully document your internet connections,
including:

Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month. Ability
to enter complex session rate structures and automatically estimate session and
cumulative costs by day or month. Ability to count down time remaining on
either prepaid hours or hours charged at a flate rate. Optional Log file
documenting session and cumulative times and estimated costs. Optionally
compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute. Some online
services
seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself. Allows automatic
connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer. Allows multiple
timers with individual settings. You can keep track of use of multiple
providers
conveniently. Each can have it's own log file. Compatibility with Open
Transport when used with OT/PPP. FreePPP v 2.5 or earlier are also supported.

New features in version 2.1:

OT/PPP support - to connect with OT/PPP just select OT/PPP in the
Preferences.

Resizable Timer Window - if the timer window is too small, Shift-click on the
window and drag to resize the window. Once resized you can enlarge the fonts.

Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.x. Do not
try
to open Timers created with version 1.x. Instead, keep version 2.x in its own
folder and create new timers using version 2.x. You may continue to use v. 1.x
simultaneously if you need to time two things at once.

Subject: [*] KidKeys

I have written a public domain program (called KidKeys) for
pre-schoolers. I have a two year old, and found that there is very
little commercial software available for children who type and click,
but can not yet track a mouse.

When a letter or number key is pressed, my program displays that letter
or number in large colorful type, and says it using my voice.

The entire program is designed very simply to make it as bug free as
possible. Those of us with children know how useless it is to say,
"Please sit patiently while I reboot with extensions turned off".

You can download this program from my web site
<http://www.gansler.com/Software.html>, where I also have the source
code posted <http://www.gansler.com/KidKeys.c.html>.

KidKeys has been tested on a PowerMac 7600, Quadra 650, and a PowerBook
520c. It runs in less than 400k of RAM. The download size of the binhex
file is about 114k.

Subject: [*] Sleeper 2.1.1 - Sleep mode for all Macs

Sleeper is a shareware control panel for desktop Macintoshes and Power
Macintoshes that dims the screen, powers down Energy Star compliant
monitors, and spins down disk drives after periods of inactivity. This
saves energy and reduces noise levels in your work area without forcing you
to shut down your Mac.

Because Sleeper does not rely on Apple's Power Manager, Sleeper will work
on any Macintosh running System 7.0 or later, and does not suffer from some
of the quirky behavior reported with Apple's Energy Saver 2.0. Sleeper is
well suited for unattended operations as well as personal desktop use. For
file servers, ftp and http hosts, and fax and BBS systems, Sleeper will
wake the drives up when they are needed and put them to sleep when they are
idle. Sleeper is easily configurable; it provides hotkey control for
on-demand activation of its sleep features, and separate delay settings for
screen dimming, monitor power down, and disk sleep.

Sleeper will work on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, including
System 7.5.5, and will spin down both IDE and SCSI hard drives. The screen
saver feature requires a color-capable Macintosh, and Energy Star monitor
support requires an Energy Star compliant Macintosh (any Mac on which
Apple's Energy Saver control panel works) and an Energy Star capable
monitor. Sleeper supports SCSI Manager 4.3 in native mode on all machines
and requires only 26K of memory when operating.

In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are

Subject: [*] Snapz_Pro_Installer.hqx

Ambrosia Software, Inc. has just released Snapz Pro 1.0.1, which contains
a number of bug fixes and adds a few features.

The following is a list of the bugs that were fixed in Snapz Pro 1.0.1

Removed an erroneous check that caused Snapz Pro to not load at all on machines
running an OS earlier than System 7.1.3. This affected only 68K machines.

Revised the CLUT/video card synching code so that it doesn't erroneously
attempt
to synch them. Symptoms of this would be the captured image would be darker or
lighter than it should have been. This only affected some PowerBook and
grayscale monitor users.

The Register Snapz Pro application now supports the ability to send eMail
directly to us, instead of having you save it as a Text file. This works only
if
you have a SMTP server and TCP/IP connection to the Internet.

Snapz Pro now gives you an error message if you run out of disk space saving
screenshots.

Snapz Pro now properly captures the name of the frontmost application
consistently.

TrueClock? is freeware, for any Macintosh or PowerMacintosh running system
7.0 or later. It will work with 64K of memory although 128K is preferred
(especially on systems with colors or levels of gray).

It is a small application that puts on the screen a round clock to show the
(system) time. You can move or resize the clock. Its window can be made
globally
floating ("omnipotent" mode): once omnipotent, TrueClock? always remain
completely visible; it is not hidden by other windows.

You can specify colors for the hands, graduations and background. You can
disable the seconds and make the hands and graduations thick or thin.

There is an optional "digital" display to show date/time/day_of_week/timer.
Also, "Copy" (Cmd-C) puts the date/time/timer in the scrap, to be pasted in
other applications.

TrueClock? needs only 64K of memory to work, although 100K are necessary on
color systems for full functionality, and 128K is preferred.

Subject: [*] video-toolbox.c

The VideoToolbox is a collection of two hundred C subroutines and several
demo and utility programs that I and others have written to do visual
psychophysics with Macintosh computers. It is fully compatible with 680x0
and PowerPC Macs and with Metrowerks CodeWarrior and Symantec C compilers.
It's free and may not be sold without permission. It should be useful to
anyone who wants to present accurately specified visual stimuli or use the
Mac for psychometric experiments. The text file "Video synch" discusses all
the ways of synchronizing programs to video displays and the many pitfalls
to avoid. The TimeVideo application checks out the timing of all video
devices in anticipation of their use in critical real-time applications,
e.g. movies or lookup table animation. "Video bugs" reports all known bugs
uncovered by TimeVideo's testing of 56 video cards and drivers. Low-level
routines control video timing and lookup tables, display real-time movies,
and implement the luminance-control algorithms suggested by Pell
and Zhang (1991). In particular, CopyWindows (or CopyBitsQuickly)
faithfully copies between on-screen and off-screen windows (or
bit/pixmaps), WindowToEPS saves an image to disk as encapsulated
PostScript, for later printing or incorporation into a document, and
SetEntriesQuickly and GDSetEntries load the screen's color lookup table,
all without any of QuickDraw's color translations. NoisePdfFill.c quickly
generates visual noise images whose pixels are samples from a specified
probability density function. High-level routines help analyze
psychophysical experiments (e.g. maximum-likelihood fitting and graphing of
psychometric data). Assign.c is a runtime C interpreter for C assignment
statements, which is useful for controlling experiments and sharing
calibration data. This collection has been continually updated since 1991.
More that one hundred colleagues subscribe to the email distribution (see
below), and have indicated that they are using the software in their labs.
Documentation is in the source files
hemselves. Many of the routines are Mac-specific, but some very useful
routines, e.g. the luminance-control, statistics, maximum-likelihood
fitting algorithms, and the runtime interpreter are written in Standard C
and will work on any computer. Those wishing to acknowledge use of the
VideoToolbox software might cite:

microcomputer displays. Vision Research, 31, 1337-1350. Reprints are
available.
http://rajsky.psych.nyu.edu/VideoToolbox/

WHAT'S NEW (since August 22, 1996):

* Compatible with CodeWarrior 10. Mostly this was a matter of allowing
CodeWarrior to update the project format, in the Project setting "C/C++
Language", setting "Source Model:" to "Apple C", and enabling all C/C++
warnings and "Treat all warnings as errors". * AfterDark.c enhanced by
David Brainard to return the current state, so you can restore it later.
* AtExitToShell.c has additional documentation (no change in source
code). * GDOpenWindow.c made C++ compatible (thanks to Eric
=46redericksen). * GDOpenWindow.c enhanced to support 24-bit color (thanks
to David Brainard). * GDOpenWindow.c Fixed long-standing cosmetic bug in
GDDisposeWindow(); it now restores the CLUT to a standard color table,
and redraws the desktop, so that everything will look normal. *
Quitter.=B5 Metrowerks project now has the "High Level Events Aware" bit
set, so Quitter works again. * Seconds.c: new function s=3DSeconds()
returns time, as a double with 20 =B5s or beter precision (20 ns on PCI
PowerMac), since the Mac booted. Unlike the routines in Timer.c,
Seconds() is immune to interrupt suspension (at least on PCI PowerMacs),
and has no overhead and no side effects. * SndPlay1.c comments now
include links to good references (no change in source code). * Timer.c
documentation: added Apple's confirmation, forwarded by Sigurdur
Asgeirsson, of the formerly undocumented need to keep zeroing the
tmReserved field. It's all now documented in Tech Note 1063, which cites
the VideoToolbox. (Thanks Eric Simenel.) * VBLInstall.c: You can now
find out the time elapsed (in microseconds) since the beginning of the
frame (i.e. last vertical blanking of your monitor). vblData->microTicks
is set to Microseconds( ) at that time. Based on a suggestion of Stefan
Treue. * VideoToolboxMATLAB.c was discarded because it's no longer
needed.
