Subject: (C) John Madden football

Dear Digest readers,
Well finally I got my mouse to connect to my Powerbook, and must say
one thing, if you don't have at least a G3/400, (g4/350 is ok), and
an ATI 128, you don't have enough speed for John Madden. OpenGL is
so slow on the G3/233 with 512k backside cache and 192MB of RAM as to
make large parts of the animation skip during gameplay. Each play
skips. Also movement of the mouse pointer itself is slow and
somewhat jumpy. It is not funny. The G3/233 only has an ATI LT
Pro graphics card and 4 MB of VRAM, and is not upgradable easily.
Virtual Memory was off during the experiment. They should increase
the minimum system requirements on their box, or detect the processor
during the installation and adapt the graphics to match the system
that exists.... I don't get this kind of slowdown playing Starship
Titanic.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: 1400/G3 Battery problems-update

An update on the battery problem with my 1400cs with the NewerTech G3 chip
instaled. I sent it back to NuPower for a free repair. It took 2 weeks and it
doesn't seem to help. The screen dims about 3/4s power and it still shuts
down at 1/2 power. the only thing is it seems more consistant. I guess I'll
have to live with the lack of battery (1/2 hour +/-) I now get.

Subject: [*] Disk Recall

ABSTRACT

Disk Recall

Disk Recall - is a super-fast disk and FTP cataloger. It creates
catalogs of any type of disk (floppies, hard drives, CD-ROMs,
Zips, Sy-Quests, AppleShare volumes, etc...). It features an
intuitive Finder-like list view for browsing disk contents, and a
powerful multi-criteria search engine modeled after Sherlock's
Find File. Disk Recall uses a very fast archiving algorithm to
scan disks 5 to 10 times faster than other Macintosh catalogers.
Disk Recall aslo archives FTP servers and catalogues Info-mac
abstracts as well. Disk Recall also lets you search for duplicate
files; delete files or folders; scan inside Stuffit files; open,
reveal and copy items in the Finder, and more. Registered users
also get the Disk Recall Extension which automatically scans disks
at eject time. Unlike with other (slower) catalogers, users barely
notice the extra delay when ejecting disks. Disk Recall is
distributed as shareware. Version 1.2.3 fixes minor bugs from
version 1.2.1. Shareware $20

Mitch's Power Actions

The file Mitch's Power Actions are set of defined 'actions' for use
with Adobe's PhotoShop version 4. Each is a script that performs
a series of adjustments to an image layer.

To use these Actions, choose Load actions from the menu at the upper
right of the "Actions' palette in Adobe Photoshop. Select the MPA file
in the dialog box and the actions should appear in the actions palette.

Mitch's Power Actions is distributed as freeware.

Most of the ideas I got for these actions have been inspired by Kai Krause and the
excellent Kai's Power tips, which is available in this archive.

"If you have to exchange files between a PC and a Mac, NameCleaner is an
indispensable tool" - Carolyn Bickford, MacDownload

NameCleaner is a popular, industrial-strength utility to manipulate file
names and types. Batch-rename and retype entire folders or disks quickly
and easily. It is specially designed to move files to and from foreign
file systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows95, Windows NT, NetWare
and Unix.

NameCleaner includes built-in mappings for over 100 PC Extensions and
Macintosh file types and provides a full report of all cleaning
operations. "Cleaners" are available for a multitude of functions, such
as mapping DOS extensions to and from Mac Type/Creator codes, filtering
file names for other operating systems, rule- or dictionary-based
capitalization, find and replace phrases, append file information such as
date or size, and more. It also includes a contextual menu plug-in for
cleaning files directly from the Finder.

Version 2.0.1 adds a switch for Navigation Services and better support
for the Appearance Manager.

Search Designer is a program which makes what are commonly referred to
as word searches or word finds. These, if these terms aren't familiar
to you, are grids of random letters with words hidden in them in various
directions (up, down, back, front).

The purpose of Search Designer is to simplify the construction of these
word searches to increase efficiency and time to work on ideas rather
than coming up with random letters. It is extremely useful for school,
as word searches with good clues to the words can have educational
value, and Search Designer makes construction of these simple.

Reading all of the Documentation is recommended before using this
program.

Search Designer is Shareware and costs a mere $15.00.

System Requirements:
System 7.1 or later; MacOS 8 or later

completely new interface featuring Sherlock 2/QuickTime 4, a built-in help
system and support for the Internet, News and People (via LDAP) plugin
types introduced with MacOS 9.

The program can now also apply icons to plugins from files or applications
in MacOS. The user only have to choose a file or program to import the icon
resources from. Another new function is extended multi-language
capabilities alllowing anyone to translate the program into any language.

The current version of Sherlock II Creator contains lamguage files for the
English and Swedish languages. The program is freeware.

Subject: [*] The Atomic Mac 3.5.6

The Atomic Mac is a periodic table of the elements for the Macintosh. In
addition to the usual information found in such programs, The Atomic Mac
also contains a wealth of nuclear information on each isotope, including
half life, decay mode, and daughter products. X-ray data (fluorescence and
binding energies) is also available. A molecular weight calculator makes it
easy to find the molecular weight of compounds. A shaded diagram showing
the ranges of physical properties makes it easy to visualize relationships
across the periodic table.

Data is displayed for the following physical properties:
Density
Heat of Vaporization
Heat of Fusion
Specific Heat
Thermal Conductivity
Linear Expansion Coefficient
Melting Point
Boiling Point
Atomic Radius
Covalent Radius
Magnetic Susceptability
Electrical Resistivity
Electron Affinity
Electric Dipole Polarizability

This is VSE Be Found 1.5.1, a new version of the
award-winning web site promotion tool for Macintosh
computers.

VSE Be Found analyzes your web pages and gives concrete tips
on how to improve them to obtain a good ranking on search
engines. Then it automatically submits the web page URL to
popular search engines such as AltaVista, Excite, Lycos,
etc.

In contrast to other applications VSE Be Found supports
more complex URL submissions to search engines that
require to give details about categories, contact
information etc. It also features a built-in FTP client.

The new version features a new one-step function to deselect
all search engines which conflict with your web site
description. Four minor bugs have been fixed.

Worlds Apart: An Interactive Fugue
Version 1.1
By Suzanne Britton (tril@igs.net)
http://www.igs.net/~tril/worlds/

Getting Started

This is a TADS game, and therefore requires a TADS or HTML TADS
run-time. This package includes HyperTADS 1.1.3, which is an HTML TADS
interpreter for the Macintosh based on HTML TADS 2.5.1. It should be
everything you need to play the game.

If HyperTADS doesn't suit you, there are other TADS interpreters for the
Macintosh. Check the TADS Page at http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/tads/ for
advice on how to obtain and install the right interpreter for your
system.

If you are not using HTML TADS or HyperTADS, you should set your display
to use a fixed-width font if you can. Otherwise, formatting will look
odd in a few places.

If Interactive Fiction is a new thing to you, or you just want to
refresh your memory, you can get some general playing instructions
within the game by typing INSTRUCTIONS. Specific information on Worlds
Apart is available by typing ABOUT, and hints are available via the HINT
command.

This work is copyrighted freeware. The game package may be distributed
on all public archives.

Again, the Worlds Apart homepage is located at
http://www.igs.net/~tril/worlds/. Check there for information on new
releases and system-specific versions of the game.

Subject: Eudora slowdown in OS9

I'm finding that Eudora 4.2 and 4.3b are a lot slower under OS9 than
under 8.6. Specifically, it takes a good few seconds for the "Checking
Mail" window to appear after the application is launched, and any time I
switch into Eudora from another application there's a several second
delay before the cursor becomes active or a mailbox window draws. My 8.6
set-up is almost exactly the same as my OS9 one, but I don't get the
same effect with the former. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Graeme Forbes
